4 Weeks of Good Food: Conclusion

This is the (super late) 4th and last installment of my journal on getting fresh and organic veggies and fruits from Good Food Co.  As with the previous journals, I’ll begin with the week’s supply.  The content is listed below.  We also got a newsletter.

For our week’s menu, we basically had the same dishes.  Nothing new except the pan-grilled dory which was topped with malunggay pesto and melted cheese.  Hubby and I liked it so much.  LC ate it with gusto.  He loves fish and sometimes munches on cheese for merienda so I’m pretty sure it was a winner for him.

We only committed to 4 weeks with Good Food Co.  We’re no longer one of their stakeholders BUT, it doesn’t end my support for them.

The great Good stuff:

  • Fresh.  The organic produce are harvested and made ready the day before distribution.
  • Fruits.  Every week’s basket has a fruit.  For the 4 weeks we had a weekly supply of camote, 10 pieces of plantain bananas (3 in the 4 weeks), bayabas (2 in 4 weeks), ripe papaya, cassava.
  • Replacement.  If you get a bad camote, they’ll replace it in the next delivery.  Of course you have to let them know about it.
  • Salad greens.  We did not get the salad option but there were weeks we felt like we did.  For 2 weeks we got a supply of arugula, romaine and green ice lettuce.  We had basil too at one time.  Local greens, however, are always present.  We got in variety a weekly supply of chinese kangkong, talbos ng kamote, mustasa, malunggay and native pechay.
  • Information.  (1) The goodies always come with a list and a recipe.  Together with the accompanying recipe flier, Good Food has a recipe bank where one can get ideas for the menu.  As Rowie said, they learned new ways to cook up the veggies or incorporate them in the dishes.  (2)  The contents of the upcoming week’s bag is posted on their site early in the week.  I can already plan next week’s menu early on.  (3) They have a newsletter.  Makes you feel more belong to a community.
  • Very efficient communication.  Warm reception.  Char replies to emails and SMS within a few minutes or hours, or within the day.  Her replies feel like there’s always a warm smile with them.  Once, I asked Char about mustasa since I can’t find any recipe with it in their recipe bank.  She was very accommodating to search for me mustasa recipes.
  • Advocacy.  Good Food Co.  and their partner farmers and agriculturists work under the model of Community Shared Agriculture.  As explained in their site, “Community Shared Agriculture is a system that helps build relationships between the farmers and shareholders that mutually empowers them. By pledging to support the farm operations for an entire season, households receive regular, fresh, organic shares of the harvest and farmers are provided the security (or assurance) of a stable demand. More than economics, this program aims to connect shareholders with the farmers themselves in growing a sustainable planet through good food and good company.”    To me, subscribing to and supporting Good Food Co. is also empowering the small-scale farmers in Tarlac who often have difficulties sending their children to school.

So, will we commit again with Good Food?  Yes!  But next time, we will have to work around (again) and work on some things, and pray they (Good Food Co.) will be able to work out on some other things.

Action points:

  • Distribution.  Pick-up is on Saturdays, 9am to 1pm on designated areas in QC, Pasig, San Juan and Makati.  It is an effort for us to get to the pick-up point nearest us.  Hubby and I hope they’ll do delivery soon.  I did ask Char about it and she says if I know another stakeholder in our area, they can.  So I hope I can get someone in our area to sign up.  But, I still hope they can deliver to us without that condition.  Until then, we have to make our way to the pick-up point.
  • Variation from the week’s delivery.  The contents of the goodie bag is fixed and the same for everyone.  I have to plan the weekly menu based on what veggies there will be and on their quantity.  Even with the planning, there were weeks that we were not able to consume all.  Maybe someday their farm and resources can accommodate requests for variance (quantity and what vegetables or fruits).
  • Meat and dairy.  As of now, their products are local vegetables and fruits.  I hope there will come a time they can supply organic eggs and pasture-raised chicken and pork.
  • Additional trips to the market or grocery.  Since there’s no meat and we’re no vegetarians, we still have to make additional trips to the market or grocery.  Those trips include getting onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, etc.  But anyways, same thing with all groceries, I don’t know any organic goods supplier that has everything.

I sincerely hope more people will become stakeholders of Good Food Co.  There are a lot of pending needs in their farms.   These include additional seeds and seedlings, construction materials for the greenhouses, bikes for agriculturists, etc.  Getting more stakeholders will mean getting more funds to sustain the program and fully support the farmers’ livelihood.

  1. I love this whole series! Thanks for sharing your ideas for veggie dishes! And thanks, too, for sharing your list (part 1 of the series) of places that also sell organic food. Do you know whether any of those sellers sells chicken fillets? I want to switch to pasture-raised chicken (or chicken with no antibiotics), but my hubby (who does most of the cooking in our house) is attached to fillets.

      Regarding the chicken fillets, I think you can check with Pamora Farms. I saw some of their frozen products in Shopwise, Libis. They have drum sticks, breast parts… I just can’t remember if there’s fillet…
