So I got some ‘It’s for girls’ comments in varying tones with regards to LC’s toy kitchen. Hubby included. But I’m happy he supported me on the decision knowing I have very good reasons for having one.
Little Cat is just like any little boy. He’s all over the house exploring, running around, climbing everywhere, reaching out and tinkering whatever his hands can get hold of. One of the things that sets him apart, or probably makes him more like any other kid, is his affinity to the kitchen and the mess he can make in there. He likes being in the kitchen. And that’s even before we got our own place. I took that as a cue to get him his own play set. Grounded on the belief that a toy kitchen – and some other “girly toys” – are just as beneficial to little boys, I went for it.
But what really are my reasons for getting one? Here they are:
1. to hone fine motor skills such as hand-eye coordination and other things;
2. to practice and ingrain our mealtime routine – washing hands, drying hands, praying before meals, eating. In time we’ll also add putting away plate and washing the dishes. LC’s now getting better at the Sign of the Cross, by the way;
3. to encourage role-playing, imagination and creativity in a setting that’s practically part of everyday living;
These little things will eventually be translated to bigger and forth-coming events in his life. Someday, our little boy will grow up and has to take care of himself. Living in a dorm or in a bachelor pad, he’ll have to cook for himself, wash the dishes and clean his place.
Someday, he might become a chef like Gordon Ramsay, Anthony Bourdain, Bruce Lim – Pinoy chef in Asian Food Network Channel, or Roland Laudico of Bistro Filipino. Or maybe he’ll become a restaurateur like Larry J. Cruz.
But more likely, he’ll be like any man who falls in love. He’ll be whipping up a meal for his loved ones. May it be us, his parents, or someone he’s courting.
Someday, our little boy will grow up and host real parties. Someday, he might get married.
Maybe someday, LC will prepare meals for his own family. And maybe he will be a father too and be as hands-on as his own father is to him. 🙂
And finally, yes, my major reason for getting a toy kitchen,
4. To distract him from the real kitchen! Okay, sometimes… ;P
